The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the establishment of a special expert committee to drive the development of the country’s energy economy, recognizing it as a priority sector for sustainable national growth.
The government noted that weaknesses in coordination among major economic sectors have discouraged investment in energy, despite its importance.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in presenting the 2026 Budget, stressed the need for an integrated economic development framework to build a sustainable economy.
Based on this directive, the Cabinet endorsed the President’s proposal to appoint a committee chaired by Dr. Hans Wijesuriya.
The committee will be tasked with formulating national policies, strategies, and implementation frameworks to strengthen the energy economy in line with long‑term development goals. (Newswire)
