Opposition seeks Parliamentary Debate on top court vacancies

Opposition MPs signed a proposal today (26) requesting an adjournment debate in Parliament on the prolonged vacancies in Sri Lanka’s superior courts.

The proposal, submitted under Standing Order 83(1), calls for a debate on the impact of leaving more than eight vacancies in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal unfilled for over six months.

The Opposition said the debate would focus on the effect of the vacancies on the rule of law, the public’s fundamental rights, and access to justice, while urging action to fill the positions without further delay.

The signed proposal is to be forwarded to Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne seeking approval for the parliamentary debate. (Newswire)
