The government has begun diplomatic discussions with Russia to obtain fuel, Cabinet Spokesperson, Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.
Speaking at the Cabinet media briefing, he said attention is being focused on securing fuel through government-to-government agreements.
“Discussions with Russia are ongoing at a diplomatic level. In the past, we did not have the opportunity to obtain oil from Russia, but we are trying to see whether this can be done through agreements between governments.”
He added that Russia’s Deputy Energy Minister is expected to visit the country soon for further discussions.
Commenting on Iran’s offer to supply fuel, Jayatissa said the government appreciates the gesture, but noted logistical limitations.
“Countries that own ships are in a position to benefit from such opportunities, but we do not have that capability. We are thankful for the offer.”
He also said several fuel orders have already been placed, with shipments expected in April.
“We have already placed several orders for crude and refined fuel. Tenders have been opened, and we expect a few fuel shipments to arrive in April. This is how we plan to manage fuel supplies.” (NewsWire)
