Athula Tilakaratne, who was previously released from the Anuradhapura Prison under a Presidential pardon — which is currently under investigation — has been sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment by Anuradhapura High Court Judge Naleen de Hewawasam in a separate case.
The sentence was handed down for preparing a forged document to obtain Rs. 3.5 million from a bank and for the fraudulent misuse of the obtained funds.
The court imposed five years of rigorous imprisonment for using a forged document to secure the money, and an additional two years for the fraudulent use of those funds.
In addition, Tilakaratne was ordered to pay Rs. 4 million in compensation to the complainant, Dr. S.W.A. Gamini Wimalananda. Failure to do so will result in a further 10 months of imprisonment. (Newswire)
