In the ongoing first Test match against England, Sri Lanka’s decision to exclude Pathum Nissanka from the playing XI has raised eyebrows, including that of former national coach Mickey Arthur.
Known for his sharp insights into the game, Arthur took to social media to express his surprise at Nissanka’s omission, questioning the team’s strategy.
Pathum Nissanka, often hailed as Sri Lanka’s best white-ball batter, was recently recalled to the Test squad after a prolonged absence due to a back injury. His return was highly anticipated, especially given his reputation for being a reliable and consistent performer across formats. However, to the surprise of many, Nissanka was not included in the starting lineup for the first Test against England.
Instead, the Sri Lankan team management opted to continue with the current opening pair, with Nishan Madushka taking the opener’s role and Mendis slotting in at number three. This decision has sparked debate, especially considering Nissanka’s ability to stabilize the innings at the top order.
“Great to see @dds75official play so well but can somebody tell me why Phatum Nissanka is not opening the batting or have I missed something?” Mickey Arthur questioned. (Newswire)
