The Department of Meteorology has warned of increased rainfall across Sri Lanka after a low-level atmospheric disturbance near the island developed into a low-pressure area.

According to the weather forecast issued at 4 p.m. on Wednesday (21), the system is expected to bring enhanced rainfall to the island and surrounding deep and shallow sea areas on October 21 and 22.

Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely in some areas of the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces.

Showers or thundershowers are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and North-western provinces and Mannar district, with cloudy skies prevailing in these areas.

Other parts of the island are expected to experience showers or thundershowers after 1 p.m.

The department also warned of temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers, urging the public to take necessary precautions to minimize possible damage.

Misty conditions are expected in some areas of the Central and Uva provinces during the early morning hours.

The public, particularly naval and fishing communities, has been advised to closely monitor future weather forecasts and official bulletins as the low-pressure system develops. (Newswire)
