The Rehabilitation Bureau has launched a special drug prevention and awareness programme targeting Sri Lanka’s tourism and hotel industry, following concerns over drug addiction among employees in the sector.

According to Commissioner General of Rehabilitation Brigadier M. S. Amith, the initiative was introduced following requests from the tourism and hotel industry to address drug abuse among employees.

He revealed that 14% of individuals who had sought rehabilitation for drug addiction were found to be involved in the tourism and hotel industry, highlighting the need for targeted prevention programmes.

The Commissioner General said special awareness programmes have already been conducted in several areas, including the Gampaha District and the Southern Province.

As part of the initiative, another awareness programme has been scheduled for November 09, targeting hotel employees in the Sigiriya and Dambulla areas.

Officials from the Police Narcotics Bureau and the Ministry of Health are expected to participate in the programme.

Brigadier Amith said the initiative aims to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and strengthen prevention efforts within Sri Lanka’s tourism sector. (Newswire)
