Rain expected in some districts today

Showers are expected in some provinces of Sri Lanka today, while mainly fair weather will prevail in the other areas of the island, according to the Department of Meteorology.

Several spells of showers may occur in the Central, Uva and Eastern provinces and in the Polonnaruwa and Mullaittivu districts.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places in the Southern province and in the Kalutara and Ratnapura districts after 2.00 pm. 

Fairly heavy falls above 50 mm are likely at some places in Galle and Matara districts. 

Meanwhile, light showers may occur in the sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Pottuvil via Batticaloa. 

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kaluthara to Hambantota via Galle in the evening or night. 

Winds will be north-easterly, and wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Mannar via Puttalam and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. 

The sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Mannar via Puttalam, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota, will be rough at times. The other sea areas around the island will be moderate. (Newswire)
