Cabinet approval has been granted for the implementation of the “Mission Olympics” program.
Under the program, athletes will be contracted until the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games and will be provided with the necessary financial and other support for their training.
The Ministry of Sports has planned the “Mission Olympics 2028 – Journey to the Rings” to identify athletes who have shown exceptional talent and those who have Olympic hopes for the future, providing them with the necessary financial and other facilities through this program.
It is expected to identify these athletes who have the potential and skills to achieve international success and win medals at the Olympic Games, and enroll them for long-term, formal local and foreign specialist training.
Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports in this regard.
Addressing the post-Cabinet media briefing yesterday, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said that the allowances for athletes and coaches have been increased under four categories.
The allowances have been increased as follows;
- Category 1
Athletes – Rs. 150,000
Coaches – Rs. 100,000
- Category 2
Athletes – Rs. 100.000
Coaches – Rs. 65,000
- Category 3
Athletes – Rs. 75,000
Coaches – Rs. 50,000
- Category 4
Athletes – Rs. 50,000
Coaches – Rs. 30,000
Minister Jayatissa further said that any athletes receiving training overseas will receive a maximum fund of Rs. 01 million per month for a period of three months.
He added that the relevant local coaches will receive an allowance of close to Rs. 01 million per month for training, while international coaches training in Sri Lanka will receive close to Rs. 02 million per month for a period of three months. (Newswire)
