Every year in Sri Lanka, nearly 22,000 children drop out of school due to economic hardship and for many families, something as basic as schoolbooks becomes an unaffordable burden. When a child’s education depends on having the right materials, even a minor lack can cause learning to stop for “good”.
The Atlas SipSavi Christmas Promise Initiative recognized this urgent need and stepped forward with a powerful solution that turned public generosity into immediate educational support. People across the nation were encouraged to donate books at Atlas centers as part of the project with the clear and meaningful promise: for every book donated, Atlas would give one new book free.
This promise doubled the impact of every contribution. Together with Atlas books, thousands of donated books were systematically collected and prepared before carefully packaging them for distribution to children in schools facing severe economic challenges.
The project went beyond just gathering books. Atlas teams traveled to underfunded schools in Sri Lanka, where children were waiting for support that could help them continue their education. There was more to the distribution of these books than just a donation campaign. It was a direct intervention to prevent school dropouts and encourage children to return to schools with confidence and resilience.
This initiative’s strength indeed lay in its collective spirit. Individuals, families and communities came together with one shared purpose: ensuring that financial hardship would not determine a child’s right to free education.
