Every great journey begins with a question. For Taian Lanka Steel, it was a simple thought that sparked an extraordinary vision: Why can’t we build something of our own?

In 2010, that question became the foundation of Taian Lanka Steel, established by
K. Pathmanathan with a vision to strengthen Sri Lanka’s manufacturing industry. As Sri Lanka’s first steel pipe manufacturer, Taian embarked on a journey to build local manufacturing capabilities and demonstrate the potential of Sri Lankan industry.
What began as an ambitious vision grew through determination, bold decisions, and a belief in the possibilities of local manufacturing. From its early beginnings to the expansion of its manufacturing capabilities, every milestone reflected a commitment to building something meaningful — not just a business, but opportunities for people, industries, and the nation.
Behind this journey were people who believed in the vision. The early support of Pathmanathan’s elder brother, Thiyagarajah, the longstanding partnership with its Chinese partners, including Shagang Group International, and the dedication of its employees have all played an important role in shaping the company’s story.
Over the past 15 years, Taian Lanka Steel has continued to strengthen its position in the steel manufacturing industry, achieving a production capacity of approximately 8,000 metric tonnes per month and extending its reach to international markets, including the United States, Africa, and the Maldives.
Yet, the true story of Taian is not measured by production capacity or milestones alone. It lives in the trust built with customers, the opportunities created for hundreds of people, and the determination to keep moving forward.
As Taian Lanka Steel celebrates its 15th anniversary, it honours not only how far it has come, but also the people, partnerships, and purpose that made the journey possible.
The question that inspired its beginning continues to shape its future. Because Taian Lanka Steel’s story has never been just about manufacturing steel — it has been about building possibilities, strengthening Sri Lankan industry, and creating a legacy that reaches far beyond its foundations.
15 Years of Strength. A Legacy of Trust. A Future Built in Sri Lanka.
