Salaam Ramadan 2026, Sri Lanka’s foremost Muslim cultural festival and a flagship initiative of the Western Provincial Council in collaboration with the Colombo Municipal Council, was ceremonially inaugurated along Green Path, marking the start of a vibrant three-day celebration of faith, culture, and togetherness.
The Opening Ceremony began with the arrival of the Honourable Governor of the Western Province and Her Worship the Mayor of Colombo at the Nelum Pokuna entrance, where they were welcomed by children representing Sri Lanka’s diverse Muslim communities.
In a symbolic display of unity, children from the Malay, Moor, Memon, and Dawoodi Bohra communities accompanied dignitaries in a ceremonial walk to the main stage. The procession, led by the energetic “Kali Kolombo” dance troupe, set a festive tone for the evening.
The ceremony included the traditional lighting of the oil lamp followed by the National Anthem, reflecting the national and inclusive character of the event.
In his Welcome Address, the Chairman emphasised that Salaam Ramadan is not a celebration for one community alone, but an open invitation to all Sri Lankans, regardless of faith or background to experience the shared values of generosity, compassion, and unity that define the Holy Month of Ramadan.
Her Worship the Mayor reaffirmed Colombo’s commitment to inclusivity and cultural engagement, while the Honourable Governor commended the organisers for creating a dignified and welcoming platform that strengthens harmony among communities.
A highlight of the evening was the official switching on of the Salaam Ramadan Festival Lights by the Honourable Governor, joined by dignitaries and Task Force members, transforming Green Path into a radiant Ramadan boulevard.
Over the next three days, from 27 February to 1 March 2026, between 5.00 p.m. and midnight, Green Path (Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha) will feature more than 120 curated food and retail stalls, cultural performances, heritage exhibitions, Arabic calligraphy, henna art, and immersive family experiences.
An exclusive Kids’ Zone has been specially designed to provide a safe and engaging space for children, while dedicated prayer facilities have been thoughtfully arranged to ensure visitors can observe their religious obligations comfortably during the festival.
Families, young people, professionals, and visitors from across the island are warmly encouraged to attend. Salaam Ramadan offers a unique opportunity to experience the culinary traditions, artistic expressions, and cultural heritage of Sri Lanka’s Muslim communities in an atmosphere that is safe, welcoming, and celebratory.
