An Ambalangoda Pradeshiya Sabha member representing the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has been arrested by the Galle District Crimes Division for allegedly possessing an illegal firearm.
Police said the suspect was taken into custody over the unlawful possession of a repeater gun.
Investigators have launched inquiries into how the councillor obtained the firearm and whether it had been used in any criminal activities.
Further investigations are being conducted under the supervision of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Southern Province Kithsiri Jayalath and Director of the Galle District Crimes Division, Assistant Superintendent of Police Namal Perera. (Newswire)
