The National Kidney Disease Prevention and Research Unit reports that roughly five people die each day in Sri Lanka due to chronic kidney disease (CKD).
According to Acting Director Dr. Chintha Gunaratne, over 1,600 people died in 2023 alone from long‑term CKD.

Dr. Gunaratne told a media briefing that many patients do not recognise symptoms early, and delays in testing can result in irreversible damage.

She stressed the importance of routine kidney tests, especially for those with risk factors. (Newswire)
