Court fines Nuwara Eliya supermarket Rs. 500,000 over price violation

The Nuwara Eliya Magistrate’s Court has imposed a fine of Rs. 500,000 on a supermarket  after it pleaded guilty to selling drinking water at a price higher than the approved maximum retail price.

According to court officials, the supermarket had sold a bottle of drinking water priced at Rs. 100 for Rs. 130. The case was filed following an investigation by consumer protection authorities, who confirmed the violation of regulated retail pricing.

The penalty was issued today, 10 December 2025, marking one of the highest fines imposed recently in the district for overpricing essential goods. (Newswire)
