Actor-turned-politician Vijay moved closer to becoming the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu after the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) secured the majority mark with the backing of Left parties and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK).
According to Indian media reports, support extended by the Communist parties and VCK pushed the Vijay-led alliance past the 118-seat threshold required to form a government in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly.
Celebrations erupted outside TVK headquarters in Chennai, with party workers and supporters gathering in large numbers, waving flags, setting off fireworks, and chanting slogans in support of Vijay.
The development marks a major political breakthrough for Vijay, whose TVK contested its first major state election after the actor formally entered politics.
The backing from the Left parties and VCK is being viewed as a significant post-election realignment in Tamil Nadu politics following a closely fought election. (Newswire)
