Former Navy Commander Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) on Friday over allegations linked to the recruitment of Yoshitha Rajapaksa to the Sri Lanka Navy in 2006.

In a statement issued following the arrest, CIABOC said Karannagoda was taken into custody over allegations that Yoshitha Rajapaksa had been recruited as a cadet executive officer despite not meeting the required qualifications for the post.

The Commission further alleged that Rajapaksa was subsequently facilitated to attend a training programme at the Royal Naval Academy in the United Kingdom at State expense, outside the established recruitment procedures.

According to CIABOC, the alleged actions amount to an offence of corruption. Karannagoda was arrested at around 10.05 a.m. at the Commission’s premises and is due to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court. (Newswire)
