
The body of a 14-year-old boy, who reportedly died under suspicious circumstances in Nuriyawatte, Deraniyagala was exhumed today (Jan. 12) on the orders of Avissawella Magistrate Pramod Jayasekara.
The boy died on January 2 while at home with his mother and father. Initial investigations by Police raised concerns regarding the cause of death, leading to the arrest of both parents.
Following their arrest, the suspects were produced before the Avissawella Magistrate’s Court and have since been remanded at the Kuruwita Prison.
Relatives of the deceased and residents in the area staged a protest on January 6, demanding a thorough investigation and urging authorities to uncover the truth behind the child’s death.
Today’s exhumation was conducted to facilitate a fresh postmortem examination and determine the exact cause of death. The incident has sparked unrest in the area, prompting intensified investigations by police.
Earlier, Police said they received a complaint on the night of January 2 that a child was being assaulted at a house in Nuriyawatta, Section 02.
Officers who rushed to the scene found the boy lying near the house and rushed him to the area Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. (Newswire)
