A group of civil activists in Kandy staged a protest today, demanding legal action against those responsible for environmental destruction in the Ambuluwawa area and calling for the repeal of the Ambuluwawa Act.
The protesters also called for justice for Mallika Thebuwanarachchi, a teacher at Gampola Jinaraaja Boys’ College, who died following a landslide at the Ambuluwawa mountain.
A notable feature of the protest was the participation of former JVP MP Navarathna Bandara, who had raised objections in Parliament in 2009 when the Ambuluwawa Dissanayake Mudiyanselage Jayarathna Religious Centre and Biodiversity Complex Act was introduced.
Residents living in areas at the foothills of the Ambuluwawa mountain also took part in the demonstration. (Newswire)
