Sri Lanka’s fastest sprinter Yupun Abeykoon has announced his retirement from athletics, saying he leaves the sport “owing nothing to my country, but indebted to the world.”
In an emotional statement, Abeykoon thanked his family, coaches, teammates, the Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Athletics, his Italian training team, sponsors, and millions of Sri Lankans who supported him throughout his career.
He said representing Sri Lanka and bringing international recognition to the country was the greatest honour of his life, but added that he regrets having to retire while still capable of competing.
Abeykoon said he will reveal the reasons behind his decision and share his experiences about the current state of Sri Lankan athletics in the next chapter of his journey. (Newswire)
