An SLTB bus narrowly avoided a major accident early this morning (26) when its braking system suddenly failed while travelling from Thalawakelle to Colombo, thanks to the quick action of the driver, police said.
The incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. on the Hatton–Colombo main road in the Ginigathhena, Kadawela Bend area. According to the Ginigathhena Police, the driver managed to bring the bus under control by steering it into a sand mound on a steep section of the road, preventing it from running off.
When the bus began to lose control while descending the slope, the driver has reportedly shifted into second gear. When the main braking system failed, he used the hand brake to guide the bus safely into the sand mound.
Around 80 passengers were on board at the time. Following the incident, the driver and conductor coordinated the transfer of all passengers to another bus to continue to their destination. (NewsWire)
