The Sri Lanka Basketball Federation faced backlash after charging Rs. 600 for entry to the FIBA Asia Cup Under-18 tournament, including from school children. The decision resulted in several disappointed students turning away from the Sugathadasa Stadium.
Basketball schools have voiced strong complaints, arguing that such charges hinder the sport’s promotion among the youth. They stress that free entry for school children would foster greater interest and participation in basketball. Critics argue that the Federation should prioritize promoting the sport rather than focusing on revenue.
“You need around Rs 10,000 to take a school basketball squad for a match, this is not the way to promote the game as many schools can’t afford this” a senior basketball coach said.
To ensure future growth and engagement, it is in the sport’s best interest to offer free entry to students, encouraging the next generation of basketball players.
