Suspect arrested with protected wildlife parts in Galewela

A suspect was arrested in the Wekadapola area of the Galewela Police Division for allegedly possessing protected wildlife parts intended for illegal sale, following a joint operation conducted on June 19.

The operation was carried out by intelligence officers of the Sri Lanka Air Force Intelligence Unit, together with wildlife officers from the Ritigala Wildlife Office and officials attached to the Kurunegala Assistant Director of Wildlife Office, acting on intelligence information received.

The suspect was allegedly attempting to sell the items for Rs. 300,000. The seized wildlife parts included three spotted deer antler sets, one deer antler, one sambar antler, one elk antler, leopard teeth, as well as a piece of an elephant tusk.

The suspect and the seized items were handed over to the Kurunegala Assistant Director of Wildlife Office for further legal action.

The suspect was released on two surety bails of Rs. 500,000 each and is scheduled to be produced before the Dambulla Magistrate’s Court on June 22, 2026. (NewsWire)
