Opposition MP Namal Rajapaksa, who arrived in Parliament from prison, has alleged that around 120,000 metric tonnes of coal, valued at approximately Rs. 4.62 billion, are unaccounted for from 19 shipments imported into Sri Lanka.
Addressing Parliament on Thursday, Rajapaksa claimed that records relating to the 19 coal shipments showed a shortage amounting to approximately 120,000 metric tonnes.
He said the quantity was equivalent to roughly two shiploads of coal and questioned how such a significant volume could have gone missing.
“According to these reports, 120,000 metric tonnes are missing. Who swallowed these two coal ships?” Rajapaksa asked.
Rajapaksa also criticised the government over several other issues, including electricity and fuel prices, taxation, graduate employment promises, rice imports and alleged irregularities involving containers released from the Colombo Port.
He further referred to an alleged USD 2.5 million transfer to an incorrect account and questioned whether senior government figures were linked to the incidents he raised.
Rajapaksa made the claims while accusing the government of failing to fulfil several promises made before coming to power. (Newswire)
