Corporal punishment in schools strictly banned: Education Ministry

Sri Lanka’s Education Ministry has issued a directive to all schools stating that corporal punishment and any form of physical or psychological harm to students are strictly prohibited.

The move follows court observations highlighting the need for clearer guidance to teachers and school administrators on maintaining discipline without harming students.

In a circular issued to education authorities, the ministry said no child should be subjected to physical or psychological punishment for disciplinary reasons or any other cause. It added that there will be zero tolerance for corporal punishment and that those responsible would face legal action.

The directive also refers to Circular No. 12/2016 issued on 29 April 2016 and notes that disciplinary action against offenders should be taken under the Establishments Code 461/2012 governing public officials.

School authorities have been instructed to ensure discipline is maintained in line with existing guidelines while safeguarding students’ rights and wellbeing.

The directive has been sent to provincial education authorities, principals, education directors, and other relevant officials for implementation across all schools.  (Newswire)
