The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has launched a probe into the approximately 10,000 items of gold jewellery that were recovered by the Sri Lanka Army during the civil war.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanjua Lakamali was informed of the probe by the CID today.

Gold and Silver belonging to civilians, which had been with the LTTE during Sri Lanka’s civil war and were subsequently recovered by the Army, were officially handed over to Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya last week (02 May).

At the time, the Sri Lanka Army said the gold and silver items would be transferred to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka by the National Gem and Jewellery Authority for valuation.

The Sri Lanka Army further said that the items will be returned to their rightful owners upon proof of identity and ownership. (Newswire)
