Bandarawela Rest House, operated by Cluster Holdings (Pvt) Ltd, has been fined Rs. 1 million for selling a bottle of drinking water above the legally prescribed maximum retail price (MRP).

The Bandarawela Magistrate’s Court imposed the fine on October 7 after the company pleaded guilty to charges filed by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA).

According to the CAA, its officers conducted a raid on September 23, 2026, and discovered that the establishment had sold a one-liter bottle of drinking water for Rs. 200, despite its maximum retail price being fixed at Rs. 120.

The bottle was sold at Rs. 80 above the permitted price, approximately 67% higher than the legal limit.

Following the investigation, the CAA initiated legal proceedings against the establishment, resulting in the Rs. 1 million fine.

The authority reminded businesses, including hotels, restaurants and other commercial establishments, that they must comply with legally prescribed maximum retail prices.

It also urged consumers to check the prices of regulated products and report violations through its hotline, 1977, during office hours. (Newswire)
