Kushani Nanayakkara, wife of former State Minister Dunesh Gankanda, was arrested on Saturday (7) by the Colombo Central Crimes Investigation Division over a longstanding income tax evasion case involving over Rs. 700 million, Ceylon Today newspaper reported.
Court records (Case No. 495/08/20) filed at Colombo Magistrate’s Court No. 9 state that Nanayakkara, a businesswoman and director of Green Lanka Travels, Green Seed Lanka, and Green Sri Lanka Shipping, had repeatedly failed to pay taxes over several years despite multiple warnings from the Inland Revenue Department.
After ignoring several official notices, legal action was initiated, resulting in three court summons and an open warrant for her arrest. Despite this, Nanayakkara is said to have travelled abroad on at least four occasions, raising concerns about enforcement failures.
Following delays in enforcement, the Magistrate issued a direct order to Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasooriya for her immediate arrest. A special operation led by SSP Shani Abeysekara led to her capture at a residence in Narahenpita. Police say she attempted to flee through a back door but was apprehended by officers who had already surrounded the premises. (Newswire)
