Yoweri Museveni was sworn in for a seventh consecutive term as Uganda’s president on Tuesday (11), extending his nearly four-decade rule after securing victory in the country’s disputed January elections.

The 81-year-old leader, won more than 70% of the vote, according to official election results. His new term will run until 2031.

Opposition leader Bobi Wine, rejected the election outcome, alleging widespread irregularities including ballot stuffing. Election authorities denied the claims.

Wine later left the country, claiming he feared for his safety and accusing the government of targeting opposition figures.

Museveni remains one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders, alongside figures such as Paul Biya and Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo.

Several African heads of state attended the inauguration ceremony held at Kololo Independence Grounds, including Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. (Newswire)
