Three people, including two women, have died in separate road accidents reported in Trincomalee, Weligama, and Minuwangoda.
The first incident occurred in the early hours of Monday (June 16) in the Valaiyuttu area along the Pulmoddai–Trincomalee road. A motorcycle travelling from Nilaveli towards Erakkandy veered off the road and crashed into a streetlight pole. The rider, a 44-year-old resident of Erakkandy, sustained critical injuries and later died while receiving treatment at the Nilaveli Hospital. Kuchchaveli Police are conducting further investigations.
In a second incident reported on Sunday evening (June 15), a car travelling from Kahatuduwa to Mattala lost control near the Weligama exit on the Southern Expressway and collided with a roadside barrier before overturning. The driver and a female passenger sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the Matara Hospital. The passenger, a 68-year-old woman from Madagalahathura, Ratnapura, was later pronounced dead. The car involved in the crash has been taken into police custody, and the Weligama Police are carrying out further inquiries.
The third fatal accident occurred on the same night in the Minuwangoda police division. A motorcycle heading from Minuwangoda to Weyangoda collided with a van travelling in the opposite direction at Pamunuwa junction. The motorcycle rider and the female pillion passenger were initially admitted to Minuwangoda Hospital and later transferred to Gampaha Hospital. The 53-year-old pillion passenger, a resident of Hendimahara, Udungampola, died from her injuries. Minuwangoda Police are continuing their investigation. (Newswire)
