A five-member Supreme Court bench has been appointed to consider petitions challenging the constitutionality of the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.

The bench will be headed by Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena and will also comprise Justices Achala Wengappuli, Arjuna Obeyesekere, Sampath Abeykoon and Gihan Kulatunga.

The petitions are scheduled to be taken up before the Supreme Court on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Several petitions have been filed challenging the proposed constitutional amendment, including petitions by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka and other parties.

The 22nd Amendment Bill has drawn legal and political debate, including over proposed changes relating to the judiciary. The government has said it will abide by the Supreme Court’s determination on the constitutionality of the Bill. (Newswire)
