Renovation work at the Hingurakgoda railway station in the Polonnaruwa District has commenced under a programme to upgrade 100 railway stations across the country through public-private partnerships.
The project, implemented under the Clean Sri Lanka programme, was officially launched on September 3 under the patronage of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayake, with representatives from the public and private sectors in attendance.
Hingurakgoda is the second railway station in the Polonnaruwa District to be renovated under the programme, following the completion of work at the Kaduruwela railway station.
Located on the Eastern railway line between Gal Oya and Polonnaruwa, the Hingurakgoda station has reportedly not undergone major development for around 45 years and currently operates with limited facilities.
The station is used both by passengers and for the transportation of agricultural produce from the area.
The renovation is expected to cost around Rs. 40 million, with funding provided by CIC Holdings PLC.
The project forms part of broader efforts to improve public transport infrastructure and services, including upgrades to physical facilities, the introduction of modern technology and digitalisation, and improvements to bus and railway services.
The government says the wider programme is aimed at developing an integrated public transport system through short-, medium- and long-term reforms involving both the public and private sectors. (Newswire)
