SLPP MP and former Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa has criticised the Government over Sri Lanka losing the hosting rights for the inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy, warning that the country’s women cricketers could ultimately pay the price.
Rajapaksa said losing the tournament was not merely about losing an international event, but also opportunities, revenue and international exposure for Sri Lankan cricket.
“When politicians, administrators and institutions put ego, power and personal agendas ahead of sport, it is NOT them who suffer. It is the athletes,” Rajapaksa said in a social media statement.
He said politics could play a constructive role in strengthening sport and protecting athletes, but should not interfere in sports administration for control or personal agendas.
“Put the egos aside. Put Sri Lanka first. Protect our athletes. Protect our cricket,” he said.
Rajapaksa warned that Sri Lanka could not afford to lose opportunities for its athletes because of disputes among those in charge, adding that “Sri Lanka Cricket must belong to cricket.”
His comments come amid concerns over Sri Lanka losing the hosting rights for the inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy while Sri Lanka Cricket remains under a government-appointed interim administration. (Newswire)
