Another inmate injured in the Negombo Prison clash has succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment in hospital, raising the death toll to 27.
According to official figures, the fatalities include 7 prison officers and 20 inmates.
Meanwhile, 23 prison officers and 53 inmates remain hospitalized at the Negombo District General Hospital and the Colombo National Hospital.
A clash initially broke out on Sunday (05) between groups of remand and convicted prisoners, but was later contained. Following the incident 02 individuals were reported dead and 38 others injured.
However, a fresh unrest broke out last morning between inmates and prison officials, resulting in the deaths of 27 individuals and several injured. The situation has since been brought under control. (Newswire)
