Police opened fire on a car reportedly carrying an abducted young woman after the driver defied orders to stop at a police roadblock in the Narahenpita area on Saturday, police said.
The incident occurred after Narahenpita Police received information through the police emergency hotline regarding the alleged abduction.
Acting on the information, officers set up a roadblock on Nawala Road and ordered the approaching car to stop. However, the driver allegedly ignored the order and continued driving, prompting police officers to open fire in an attempt to stop the vehicle.
Police said the driver subsequently abandoned the car and fled the area, leaving behind the young woman who had allegedly been abducted. No one was injured in the shooting.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the 26-year-old woman had allegedly been abducted near the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH).
Police have launched a search for the suspect who fled the scene.
