The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the award of a contract to widen and improve a key section of William Gopallawa Mawatha in Kandy, which falls under the purview of the Road Development Authority.
The section from kilometre 2+900 to kilometre 3+736 has been identified as a vital road corridor that facilitates daily commuter movement and plays a significant role in urban mobility. Authorities say the upgrade is essential to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and meet the growing transport demands of the area.
Tenders were called under the national competitive procurement procedure to expand and upgrade the road to a four-lane standard. Five bidders submitted proposals for the project.
Based on the recommendations of the High-Level Standing Procurement Committee, the Cabinet approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development to award the contract to the substantially responsive lowest bidder for Rs. 696.75 million, excluding VAT.
