The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court has imposed fines totalling Rs 200,000 on a supermarket chain and a manufacturing company for selling and distributing salt that failed to meet national quality standards, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) said.
The court, on June 17, 2026, fined the two companies Rs 100,000 each after finding them guilty of misleading consumers by placing on the market salt that did not comply with the SLSI 80:2019 standard specification.
The case was filed by the CAA following an investigation into the sale of a powdered table salt product. Samples collected during a raid at a supermarket outlet in Colombo were sent to the Government Analyst’s Department, which confirmed that the product did not meet the required standards.
The manufacturer and distributor were subsequently charged under Sections 30 and 31 of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act for misleading consumers. The court found both companies guilty and imposed the fines.
The CAA urged consumers to report traders and manufacturers who sell substandard products by contacting its 1977 hotline during office hours. (NewsWire)
