President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has instructed officials to expedite legal amendments to enable the swift destruction of seized narcotics.
The directive was issued at a meeting of the ‘Ratama Ekata’ National Operation Council on eradicating drug abuse held at the Presidential Secretariat on Wednesday (18).
The President said the increase in arrests related to narcotics was a positive development, but stressed that public confidence depends on ensuring that seized drugs are promptly destroyed.
He noted that building trust among both the public and operational teams involved in anti-narcotics efforts is a priority.
The President emphasised that the government’s anti-drug programme should not be weakened by social or economic challenges facing the country.
He called for continued efforts to dismantle drug supply and distribution networks, strengthen rehabilitation and legal processes, and maintain sustained engagement with the public to ensure the success of the national programme. (NewsWire)
