Watawala records highest rainfall in 24 hours amid severe weather

Watawala in the Nuwara Eliya District recorded the highest rainfall in Sri Lanka over the past 24 hours, receiving 204 mm of rain by 6.00 am on Monday.

Several other locations also recorded more than 100 mm of rainfall, including Norton (187.8 mm), Dolosbage (172.0 mm), Nawalapitiya (153.4 mm), Hatton (148.4 mm), Kitulgala (140.8 mm), Hunugal Oya (137.8 mm), Kotagala (137.0 mm), Nanu Oya (131.6 mm), Wewelwatta (112.4 mm) and Waleboda (101.2 mm).

Authorities said continuous heavy rainfall over the Central Highlands and parts of Ratnapura, Kegalle and Galle districts has caused water levels in several rivers to rise.

The public has also been urged to remain vigilant over the risk of landslides and to follow official warnings issued by relevant authorities. (Newswire)
