Interim order issued halting construction of proposed Jaffna indoor stadium

The Jaffna High Court has issued an interim order halting construction of a proposed indoor stadium within the protected Jaffna Old Park complex, overriding an earlier District Court decision that allowed the project to proceed.

During court proceedings last week, it was announced that the order will remain in effect until the final determination of the petition.

When asked if the Attorney General could guarantee that no construction would take place until the injunction is resolved, state counsels requested more time to respond.

The Rs. 170 million project, initiated by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, aims to promote indoor sports in the region.

However, petitioners argue the site is a historic charitable trust property, gifted in 1853 by British colonial administrator Sir Percival Ackland Dyke.

The High Court will hear objections to the project on April 30. (Newswire)
