A public awareness march was held today (26 June) in Colombo to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, as part of the ongoing national drug prevention programme “Iwathwenu.”
The programme, launched on 30 October 2025, is being implemented islandwide with awareness activities conducted by police stations and relevant government institutions.
As the main event, the Ministry of Public Security organised a march from Colombo Port City to Kollupitiya Junction with the participation of multiple state institutions, including the police, tri-forces, and the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board.
More than 1,000 participants, including police officers and youth, took part in the procession under the theme “Let’s walk with pride towards a drug-free nation.” Awareness leaflets were distributed along the route, highlighting the importance of public cooperation in combating drug abuse.
Organisers also promoted the 1818 hotline and rehabilitation services during the campaign.
The event was attended by Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala, Women and Child Affairs Minister Saroja Paulraj, Deputy Minister Sunil Watagala, MPs, senior officials, and the Inspector General of Police.
Police bands, the Navy band, and cultural performances by the National Youth Services Council added colour to the event, which also included public safety and traffic support from police units in Colombo.
Officials said the initiative aims to strengthen public awareness and support efforts to build a drug-free society in Sri Lanka. (Newswire)
