Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya told Parliament today (24) that tomorrow will demonstrate the unity of the Government’s 158 MPs, dismissing speculation surrounding the cohesion of the parliamentary group.
Speaking during the debate on the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution Bill, the Prime Minister said the Government’s MPs were driven by a collective objective rather than individual interests.
“By 7 p.m. tomorrow, we will be able to see what the situation in this Parliament is. Tomorrow, we will be able to see the unity of these 158 members,” the Prime Minister said.
She acknowledged that various claims were being circulated but maintained that the unity among the 158 MPs had “not been shaken even by the slightest degree.”
The Prime Minister said that by tomorrow evening, it would become clear how that collective unity would contribute towards what she described as the ongoing transformation of the country.
During her speech, Amarasuriya also said hope that Sri Lanka could become a better country was growing among the public.
She cited the recent railway strike as an example, saying that when passengers were unable to purchase tickets during the strike, some young people bought two tickets the following day to compensate for the previous journey.
“It may be a small gesture, but it is a belief that this country can be better,” she said.
The Prime Minister said this hope extended to expectations of a better public service, leaders with integrity, public institutions responsive to citizens, and an independent and fair judiciary.
She described this growing public confidence as a key source of strength for the Government’s stated efforts to transform the country. (Newswire)
