Four arrested over fatal street racing accident in Horana

Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the dangerous motorcycle racing incident that occurred near the Junction on the Ratnapura–Panadura road on the night of January 16, 2026, Police said.

Horana Police apprehended the suspects on January 27 for allegedly organizing the illegal street race, assisting in its coordination, and recording the event, charging the suspects for causing a public disturbance.

The suspects, aged 19, 21, 24, and 25, are residents of Poruwadanda, Galpatha, and Karandana. They were produced before the Horana Magistrate’s Court, which ordered their remand until February 2, Police said.

Separately, on January 23, Police arrested two motorcyclists who performed one-wheeled stunts during the funeral procession for the 18-year-old who died in the street racing accident. They were also remanded until February 6.

Meanwhile, two additional suspects, both 18 years old, were arrested on January 28 for dangerously filming the motorcade while riding against traffic. They were ordered to be held until February 2.

Police have launched further investigations to trace three motorcycles used in the incident and are analyzing mobile phone data of the suspects to uncover additional evidence. (Newswire)
