Sri Lanka secures Highest Vote in UN CEDAW Election

Sri Lanka has been re-elected to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW Committee), securing the highest number of votes in elections held at the United Nations Headquarters.

Professor Rangita de Silva received 144 of the 185 valid votes cast, topping all successful candidates and becoming the only Sri Lankan to be re-elected to the CEDAW Committee.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the result reflects the confidence of the international community in Sri Lanka’s commitment to advancing women’s rights and promoting gender equality.

The successful candidates included Sri Lanka (144 votes), Egypt (141), Uganda (140), Mongolia (136), Canada (135), Estonia (133), Azerbaijan (133), Cuba (128), Spain (125), Nigeria (123), Mexico (119), and Antigua and Barbuda (118).
