The US House of Representatives has passed a resolution seeking to prevent President Donald Trump from taking further military action against Iran without congressional approval.
The measure was approved by a narrow 215-208 vote, with four Republicans joining Democrats in a rare bipartisan rebuke of the administration’s handling of the conflict.
The resolution marks the fourth attempt by lawmakers to limit Trump’s war powers since the conflict with Iran began in February. Critics argue that continued military action lacks proper authorization from Congress.
Republican lawmakers Thomas Massie, Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Barrett and Warren Davidson voted alongside Democrats in support of the measure. Democratic Congressman Jared Golden, who had opposed similar efforts in the past, also backed the resolution.
The legislation must still be approved by the Republican-controlled Senate before it can proceed further.
Even if approved by the Senate, President Trump could veto the resolution, requiring a two-thirds majority in both chambers of Congress to override his decision.
The vote comes despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. Trump said negotiations with Iran were progressing well and could be concluded as early as this weekend, although both sides have exchanged strikes in recent days despite a ceasefire agreement. (Newswire)
