The Kandy Multimodal Transport Terminal, one of the major development projects underway in Kandy, is expected to open to the public before the third quarter of 2027, Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Dr. Prasanna Gunasena said.
Speaking during an inspection visit to the construction site, the Deputy Minister said the project, estimated to cost US$69.3 million, would bring together around nine bus terminals currently operating across Kandy city.
He said the relocation of these bus terminals would take place gradually and require additional time.
The Deputy Minister explained that the project also includes plans to improve access roads and establish satellite bus stations along key routes leading to the terminal.
Feasibility studies for the proposed satellite stations are currently underway, with construction expected to begin following the completion of the studies.
He added that several road development projects, including road widening, new access roads and proposed four-lane roads, would be implemented alongside the terminal project.
These improvements will also be linked to the Central Expressway development.
The Deputy Minister expressed confidence that the combined transport infrastructure projects could bring a noticeable reduction in traffic congestion in Kandy by 2029 or 2030. (Newswire)
