The United National Party (UNP) has rejected allegations that it opposes measures aimed at improving animal welfare, while clarifying its position on the proposed Animal Welfare Bill.
In a statement issued today (05), the UNP said recent media reports had incorrectly portrayed the party’s stance on the legislation.
The party outlined a series of proposed amendments, including provisions aimed at safeguarding the participation of elephants in Perahera processions. The UNP proposed that regulations governing the welfare of Perahera elephants be formulated by the Minister in consultation with the Mahanayake Theros of the major Buddhist Nikayas and the Diyawadana Nilame, with parliamentary approval required for such regulations.
The UNP also called for the inclusion of representatives nominated by the Diyawadana Nilame and the four Mahanayake Theros in the Animal Welfare Advisory Committee.
Highlighting what it described as shortcomings in the Bill, the party said the proposed law exempts certain activities, including the use of animals for testing cosmetics and the transport of poultry and domestic birds from ports.
The UNP further noted that several provisions contained in New Zealand’s Animal Welfare Act, including offences relating to wilful and reckless ill-treatment of animals, had not been incorporated into the proposed legislation.
The party also raised concerns over the relationship between the proposed Animal Welfare Bill and the existing Animals Act, stating that provisions contained in the Government’s proposed Animals (Amendment) Bill could create inconsistencies.
The UNP additionally criticised the omission of provisions contained in European Union regulations relating to reducing the suffering of animals during slaughter.
The party reiterated that it supports the welfare and protection of animals and rejected allegations that it is opposed to reforms aimed at strengthening animal welfare standards. (Newswire)
