A young man who pleaded guilty to filming the legs of a young woman travelling in a private bus in the Borella area with a mobile phone has been sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment, suspended for 20 years.
Issuing the verdict, Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela further imposed a fine of Rs. 1,500 on the accused and also ordered him to pay Rs. 50,000 as compensation to the victim.
It was also ordered that the accused, a resident of Dematagoda, be sentenced to an additional six months in prison if the compensation is not paid to the victim.
The incident, which occurred last year, led to a lengthy legal process. It is reported that the Police had requested that the court issue a punishment that would serve as a deterrent to others who might engage in similar acts of harassment. (Newswire)
