The Cabinet has approved contracts worth more than Rs. 5 billion for the construction of a new cardiac unit at the Trincomalee District General Hospital and a cardiac and cardiothoracic surgery complex at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital.
The projects are being implemented under a health and medical services improvement programme launched in 2018 with financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), according to the Cabinet decision.
Under the programme, cardiac treatment facilities at the National Hospital in Kandy, teaching hospitals in Anuradhapura and Kurunegala, and the Trincomalee District General Hospital are to be improved.
The Cabinet approved the award of the contracts to Maga Engineering (Pvt.) Ltd. following a tender process conducted in accordance with the relevant loan agreement and JICA procurement guidelines.
The contract for construction of the new cardiac unit at the Trincomalee District General Hospital is valued at Rs. 2,036.46 million, excluding value-added tax.
The contract for construction of the new cardiac and cardiothoracic surgery complex at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital is valued at Rs. 3,004.88 million, excluding VAT.
The two contracts have a combined value of Rs. 5,041.34 million, excluding VAT.
The projects are expected to strengthen facilities for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases and expand specialised cardiac care in the two districts. (Newswire)
