Minister Bimal Ratnayake has said that it was the people of Sri Lanka who “crossed the Rubicon” 11 months ago, describing them as the driving force behind the movement to make the country a true republic.
His comments came in response to a widely shared post by President’s Counsel Saliya Peiris, who invoked the historical reference of Julius Caesar crossing the Rubicon in 49 BC — an irreversible step that led to civil war and Caesar’s eventual triumph.
Peiris wrote that certain moments in politics or governance represent such points of no return, stressing that those decisions must be made with wisdom and with the long-term interests of the country in mind.
Ratnayake made his remarks following the arrest of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, which has triggered strong political reactions across the island. (Newswire)
